Bristol, Tennessee, incorporated in 1856, is located in Sullivan county in the northeastern corner of the state along the Tennessee/Virginia state line with sister city, Bristol, Virginia. The appropriately named, State Street divides the two states with markers placed in the center of the roadway designating the states division.
The two cities share being "the birthplace of country music" for being the site where the Carter Family traveling from Maces Springs, VA, got their start on July 31, 1927, by auditioning for record producer Ralph Peer at the "Bristol Sessions". The Birthplace of Country Music Museum recently opened to commemerate those involved.
Bristol TN at an elevation of 1672 feet, covering 29.3 square miles, had a population of 26,675 in 2012, with an estimated mean family income of $32,785. The estimated mean home value was $101,553.
Bristol, TN is home to Bristol Motor Speedway, "the world's fastest half-mile", that features a half-mile oval track with steep banked turns and it's many caution laps during races. Thunder Valley is also located on the grounds with the name holding true for the echoing through the valley as the dragsters race down the strip.
