Watauga, Tennessee, located in Carter County and Washington County in Northeast TN, is located along the banks of the Watauga River. The Doe River flows underneath the historic wooden Elizabethton Covered Bridge which was built in 1882. The Carter Mansion, located near the edge of the Elizabethton city limits, is the oldest stick frame house in Tennessee. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area is located in Elizabethton at the convergence of the Doe River and Watauga River. Sycamore Shoals take you back in history to the 18th century fort lifestyle where the Overmountain Men mustered prior to the battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.
Carter's Depot, built in Watauga, on the East Tennessee and Virginia railroad line became instrumental during the civil war. William Bean, an early white settler built a cabin just downstream from present day Watauga along Boone Creek in 1769.
